How to Search Criminal Dockets
Geneva County puts its online criminal docket access in two places. Just One Look sells case-by-case lookup. Alacourt.com offers read-only subscriptions with case details and any available images. Neither option is a free county search portal. A full case number works best as your search key. A party name helps when the service allows it. You still have to match the result on Geneva County, court division, filing year, and case type before trusting it.
- Identify Circuit Criminal, District Criminal, or the municipal court that issued the case.
- Gather the complete case number from a notice, bond paper, pleading, or prior order when possible.
- Use Just One Look or Alacourt, then select Geneva County and the correct criminal division.
- Read the case header, chronological actions, newest setting, plea, and disposition as separate fields.
- Call or visit the Geneva County Circuit Clerk when an image is missing or official proof is needed.
You can also go straight to the clerk. Call 334-684-5620, or email ashley.powell@alacourt.gov. Visit the counter at 200 North Commerce Street between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. You can also mail a request to P.O. Box 86, Geneva, AL 36340. Rule 30 lets the clerk insist on a written request. Ask about the current fee, accepted payment, and return postage before you send any money.
Geneva County Criminal Court Split
Start by asking which forum holds the case. Geneva County Circuit Court carries the felony dockets. Geneva County District Court takes misdemeanors, preliminary felony proceedings, and other limited-jurisdiction criminal work. One office, the Geneva County Circuit Clerk, keeps both records. Yet each division maintains its own index. Municipal ordinance cases and city traffic tickets stay with the issuing municipal court. An appeal or transfer can move them.
Quick answer: A felony search starts in Circuit Criminal, while a misdemeanor or early felony-stage search often starts in District Criminal.
A name search that returns nothing may simply mean you are in the wrong forum. Before deciding no Geneva County criminal docket exists, check the citation, the charging paper, the county code, and the court name. A municipal case belongs with its city clerk. An appeal, meanwhile, lives on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals docket.
What a Criminal Docket Shows
Think of the case-action summary as a dated index. It shows the court, the parties, the accusation, settings, filed papers, rulings, and the result. Full text of every filing is another matter. When an entry names a motion or order but offers no image, jot down the title and entry date so the Geneva County Circuit Clerk can pull the actual document for you.
| Case Number | County, case type, filing year, sequence, and possible extension, such as the verified Geneva pattern 34-SM-YYYY-9xxxxx.00. |
|---|---|
| Charge | The alleged offense and any displayed citation or class. A charge is not a finding of guilt. |
| Settings | Arraignment, motion, pretrial, plea, trial, sentencing, or review dates, subject to later resets. |
| Plea | The defendant's formal response. It is distinct from the final disposition. |
| Disposition | Dismissal, nolle prosequi, acquittal, conviction, transfer, appeal, or another recorded result. |
| Documents | Linked images when the access tier and confidentiality rules permit them. |
Money fields deserve a second look. Court costs, fines, restitution, and balances may appear when relevant, but check them against the signed judgment or sentencing order before relying on them. The status line can also lag behind a new filing. For the fuller picture, trust the chronological entries plus the controlling order.
Geneva County Criminal Docket Facts
Three labels get confused constantly. The charge says what the prosecution alleges. The plea records the defendant's answer. The disposition says what actually happened to the charge. Remember that an indictment is a formal felony accusation, never a conviction, and a not-guilty plea is a procedural stance, not an acquittal.
- Nolle prosequi
- A recorded end to prosecution on the charge, subject to the exact order and case context.
- Bond forfeiture
- A consequence tied to release security. It does not by itself state guilt or the case disposition.
- Acquitted
- A not-guilty result on the charge tried.
- Transferred
- An entry showing that another court or docket may hold the next activity.
Always read a label beside its date. Probation or revocation proceedings can add entries long after sentencing. An appeal opens a separate appellate case, even though the notice and record transmission still show up on the Geneva County trial docket.
Stages on a Criminal Docket
Most Geneva County criminal cases start small. District Court may see a complaint, a warrant, or an initial appearance first. Bond work or a preliminary felony stage may also begin there. A felony then moves up to Circuit Court by indictment. It picks up a Circuit Criminal number there. Misdemeanors usually stay in District Court unless some other rule shifts the forum.
Docket flow: Filing › Arraignment › Pretrial › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
The stretch between those stages fills with motions, discovery orders, notices, and continuances. For what a ruling actually says, the signed order controls. An appeal layers notice, preparation, and transmission entries onto the trial history before review shifts to the separate Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals docket.
Geneva County Criminal Search Routes
No free general portal publishes Geneva County criminal case detail. For a one-off paid lookup there is Just One Look, and Alacourt serves repeat subscribers. At the direct level, the Circuit Clerk can verify custody, public status, and copy availability. The clerk can also confirm the correct division. No Geneva page confirms a public lobby terminal. Call ahead if your trip depends on one.

Which Court Holds Criminal Dockets
The 33rd Judicial Circuit covers both Geneva and Dale Counties. That two-county setup explains why circuit judges list Ozark office addresses. It does not move a Geneva County case to Dale County, though. Compare the county name, court designation, and case number on every record you pull. Locally assigned Geneva proceedings happen at the Geneva County courthouse.
Split the work by court level. District Court handles misdemeanors and preliminary felony matters. Circuit Court takes felony actions plus certain lower-court appeals. A municipal conviction can spawn a Geneva County Circuit Court appeal. Even so, the municipal clerk keeps the city-level record. Once review begins up the chain, look higher. The Alabama Appellate Public Portal carries the separate state appellate docket.
One unified clerk makes it hard to call the wrong county office. Ask plainly for Circuit Criminal or District Criminal. Staff can explain location, fees, public access, and scheduling. But Alabama law bars clerk staff from giving legal advice.
Geneva County Criminal Forms Source
The Geneva County court forms page links straight to official Alabama forms. It is built for filing, not for reading a docket.
Forms help you prepare a filing. They do not replace the Geneva County criminal case-action summary, a paid docket search, or a clerk-certified copy of a signed order.
Geneva County Criminal Case Reset
A continuance does not erase the old setting from the action history. So the first date you find is not always the date to attend. Find the newest notice of setting, reset, continuance, or amended order. Then check the case number and court division against it before you rely on anything.
Conflicting entries call for a phone call. Reach the Geneva County Circuit Clerk at 334-684-5620. Or call District Court at 334-684-5635 for the judge's office. A lawyer on the case can sort out which notice controls. That lawyer can also say whether you must appear. Do not assume a courthouse closure creates a new date. An old Zoom order does not grant remote attendance either.
The Geneva County court calendar walks through the full setting workflow. It also covers the official daily docket. Direct confirmation routes are there too.
Geneva County Criminal Rules Library
The Alabama criminal procedure rules library is the official home for current procedural rules, including lower-court appeals. It answers rule-number questions. A docket entry that cites only a number becomes clearer there.
Rules explain the labels. The Geneva County criminal docket and the signed orders still control what actually happened in a case.
Geneva County Criminal Case Volume
The FY2023 AOC snapshot shows how big the local docket runs. Geneva County Circuit Court filed 806 cases. Of those, 51 percent were criminal. District Court filed 6,099. Criminal matters made up 14 percent of that District Court total. Those shares work out to roughly 411 Circuit criminal filings and 854 District criminal filings. Treat the official totals and percentages as the source figures.
The split matters for any Geneva County search. Look only at Circuit Court and you can miss a misdemeanor or an early felony record sitting in District Court. Stop at District Court and you can miss the indictment and the later Circuit docket.
Public Access and Sealed Criminal Dockets
Alabama court records start out public. Still, a statute, rule, or court order can seal, exempt, or restrict material. Juvenile records, protected identifiers, sealed cases, and confidential content stay off limits. No request method changes that. A name search will not open them. Remote access can also be narrower than what the clerk's office itself provides.
Key rules:
Alabama Court-Record Privacy Rules 104 and 201 through 203 establish public access while protecting sealed and confidential records.
Alabama Rule of Judicial Administration 30 governs clerk copies, certification, prepayment, and requester-paid postage.
Ala. Code section 36-12-40 supplies the public-writings right, subject to court-specific rules and stated exceptions.
A missing result has many causes. It could be the wrong county, the wrong court, a spelling error, thin electronic coverage, or a legal restriction. Give the clerk a case number. Ask whether that office holds the record and what part is public. Do not ask staff to reveal protected facts. When you need the official outcome, request the signed judgment or sentencing order with clerk certification instead of trusting a portal screen.
Geneva County Criminal Signed Orders
A docket line is just an index event. The signed sentencing order is what holds the exact sentence, count, dates, and terms. When you can only see the entry, write down its document title, number, and date. Then ask the Geneva County Circuit Clerk for that specific filed paper. Skip the broad copy of the whole case.
Rule 30 allows conventional or certified copies. It requires payment, or an obligation to pay, before release. The clerk may insist on a written request. No local copy or certification fee for Geneva County is published. Ask for a quote up front. Tell the clerk whether you need a plain or certified copy. Name the criminal division too. Give the full case number.
Older records may require paper or archive retrieval. No local electronic coverage cutoff is published. When another court or agency wants proof of a Geneva County criminal disposition, the clerk-certified copy is the authoritative product.
